Establishing Residency
The easiest way to become a Florida resident is to file a declaration of domicile with the County Clerk of the Court. The document is notarized by the clerk’s office and states you reside at a given address. The cost is $8 and may be filed at the Robert L. Anderson County Administration Center.

Register to Vote

Registering to vote also establishes residency. You can register to vote with the Supervisor of Elections or complete the registration while obtaining your driver’s license from the Tax Collector. The Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections and the Sarasota County Tax Collector have offices in the R.L. Anderson Administration Center.

Public Transportation

Public transportation by Sarasota County Area Transit  runs from the Sarasota/Bradenton Airport to Venice, Englewood and Northport.SCAT currently has 21 bus routes and two trolley routes.

(Regular bus fare is 50 cents per ride with discounts to seniors over age 65 as well as those persons with disabilities.)

Vehicle Registration

Newcomers must register their vehicles in Florida within 10 days of gaining employment or enrolling children in school. Proof of ownership, proof of Florida auto insurance, prior registration certificate, and a current driver’s license are needed.

In addition, Florida is a title law state, so newcomers must also apply for a Florida Title Certificate. For more information, contact the Tax Collector's Office.

Florida requires that you obtain or update the address on your driver’s license within 30 days of moving. Also, your vehicle must be registered within 10 days of becoming employed, establishing residency, or placing a child in public schools.

Vehicle Title & Registration

Florida law requires a vehicle to be registered within 10 days if the owner becomes employed, places children in school or establishes residency (applying for homestead property tax exemption or registering to vote). If you have relocated from out of state, you will need the current title to register and title your vehicle. If your title is being held by a lienholder, you must provide your registration. You must present proof of Florida insurance. The vehicle ID number must also be verified; therefore, you will need to bring the vehicle to your local Tax Collector’s office or contact the Sarasota County Tax Collector regarding other arrangements. If your vehicle is already registered in Florida, you are required to change the address. Visit the Sarasota County Tax Collector for more information.

Homestead Exemption

As a Florida resident, you are eligible to declare the first $25,000 of your home’s value as exempt for tax purposes, thereby reducing your ad valorem tax bill.To file for a homestead exemption, you must establish residency by December 31 prior to the year you will claim the exemption. Taxpayers must file between January 2 and March 1, with the County Property Appraiser at the Robert L. Anderson Administration Center, Venice.

Vessels/Boating

While Florida titles and registers most vessels, some states do not. If you are bringing your vessel to Florida from a state that issued you a title, it must be presented. If your vessel comes from a state that issued you a registration only, it must be presented. If your vessel is already registered in Florida, you are required to change the address. Vessels with an out-of-state registration need not register in Florida if they are here for 90 days or less. Visit the Sarasota County Tax Collector for more information.
